TL;DR

What is Text statistics?

Text statistics analyzes a block of text and reports metrics: word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time. These are useful for content writing, meeting platform limits, and understanding text complexity.

Common use cases

  • Content writing: verify word count before submitting to a publication or platform with a word limit
  • Social media: check character count to stay within Twitter/X or SMS limits
  • Documentation: estimate reading time to set reader expectations in article headers
  • Academic writing: confirm an abstract or section meets the required word range

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is typically estimated by dividing word count by an average adult reading speed. Research by Brysbaert (2019) puts the average at around 238 words per minute for non-fiction. A 1,000-word article takes roughly 4 minutes to read.

What counts as a word?

Most word counters define a word as a sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces or punctuation. Hyphenated compounds (well-known) are usually counted as one word. Contractions (don't) are usually one word. Different tools may count slightly differently.
